Which organs are most affected by T1D?

Over time complications related to type 1 diabetes (T1D) may impact vital organs within the body. These organs encompass the heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes and kidneys. Maintaining a normal blood sugar level is key to reducing the risk of numerous complications associated with diabetes.

Heart & Blood vessels

Diabetes heightens the likelihood of encountering certain issues concerning the heart and blood vessels. These encompass conditions such as coronary artery disease characterised by chest pain (angina), heart attack, stroke, arterial narrowing (atherosclerosis), and elevated blood pressure.

Nerves

Elevated sugar levels in the bloodstream can harm the walls of delicate blood vessels, particularly those nourishing the nerves, most notably in the legs. This damage can result in sensations of tingling, numbness, burning, or pain, typically starting from the extremities and progressing upwards. If blood sugar remains poorly controlled, it may eventually lead to complete loss of sensation in the affected limbs.

Nerve damage affecting the digestive system can manifest as issues with nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or constipation. Additionally, men may experience erectile dysfunction as a potential complication.

Eyes

Diabetes has the potential to harm the blood vessels within the retina, the light-sensing part of the eye, leading to a condition known as diabetic retinopathy. If left untreated, this can result in vision impairment, even blindness. Moreover, diabetes heightens the risk of developing other significant vision-related conditions, including cataracts and glaucoma.

Kidneys

The kidneys play a vital role in filtering waste products from the blood through millions of tiny blood vessels. However, diabetes can cause damage to this intricate system. In severe cases, this damage may progress to kidney failure or end-stage kidney disease, which is irreversible. Treatment for end-stage kidney disease typically involves mechanical filtration of the kidneys through dialysis or undergoing a kidney transplant.
