Do people with T1D get sick more often than other people?

While individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) do not necessarily get sick more often than other people, they are more vulnerable to complications when they do get sick.

Like everyone, people living with T1D get sick with everyday illnesses such as influenza (flu), a cold, gastro, or other common infections.

When individuals with type 1 diabetes get sick, it can bring “extra problems” and “serious risks” for them. Illness and stress can impact blood sugar levels and potentially lead to complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis.

The higher chance of complications from everyday illnesses comes from the way T1D affects the immune system. With type 1 diabetes, the immune system can have trouble fighting off infections because of its autoimmune nature.

Additionally, medications like insulin, which are used to control T1D, can influence the body’s response to illness.
