Nerve damage to the feet, often referred to as peripheral neuropathy, can manifest in various ways. The main symptoms include:
- Numbness, tingling, or prickling sensations in the toes and feet
- Burning, stabbing, or shooting pain in the affected areas
- Loss of sensation, making it difficult to feel pain or temperature changes
- Increased sensitivity to touch
- Muscle weakness or difficulty moving them
- Loss of balance and coordination
- Muscle cramps, twitching, or wasting
- Skin may become dry, cracked, or unusually smooth
In some extreme cases, nerve damage can cause foot deformities such as hammertoes or Charcot foot, where the bones in the foot weaken and collapse.
